Green, Blue, and Iridescent Silver Acrylic on Canvas abstract art

Recently, I completed a commissioned art work that features green, silver, and blue acrylic.

Remembering the old advice I received once: “If you want to be good at something you must always practice, practice practice!”

As a result, I have been using store bought canvas for my day to day practice. When I am ready to create a higher quality piece, I still prefer to use the canvas that I custom make. When I make my own canvas I use 100% heavy cotton canvas, I stretch it over thick 2 x inch wood, and I triple prime the canvas with gesso.

Unless an artist is paying for the highest premium canvas available, the level of quality I get from making my own canvas is unparalleled. As I have mentioned before, when an artist is unrestricted by the high costs of supplies and materials their creativity is able to reach heights that the average person can only dream of.

That being said, my latest commissioned work:

This untitled piece is 10 x 10 inches and has been painted on store bought canvas.

It is essentially a blend of colours with sharp splatters of silver. This piece is very abstract and was mainly a focus of colour composition rather than form.

It is a slight departure from my usual work, but I really enjoyed the way it developed.

Turquoise and Gold Splatter Acrylic on Canvas Calming Tropical Art

It is October and Autumn is upon us in Ontario Canada, yet my latest artwork has a warm tropical vibe.

Koral Reef 2018

It reminds me of a golden coral reef scattered across a perfect tropical sea. As with all of my art, I encourage discussion regarding what is depicted in the painting. Abstract art has the opportunity to become much more personal to the viewer/owner when there are no constrictions on the concept of what is being depicted.

The gold and iridescent turquoise in this work provides for a reflective surface, and so depending on the point of incidence (the angle at which the light hits the surface) the vibrancy of the colours can be increased or diminished.

This is a very special piece. It exhibits texture, reflective surface, and an abstract representation of shapes. With a beautiful frame, this piece would add a serene calmness to any cherished space.

Green and Blue Blended Acrylic on Sun Canvas Art

I frequently represent the sun in my art work. It adds a heavy presence and deep meaning to my art. Sometimes the subject is an abstract of an earthly landscape, and other times not. One of the things that I enjoy the most about creating art is the feedback I get from other people describing what they see. Art is truly as subjective as they say, and so I think the meaning, impression and other descriptors of a piece must change depending on who is looking.  I love the sun. To me, my latest work is an island sun.

Such a beautiful combination to have blue, green and yellow splashes representing the sun.

This 13 x 13 inch acrylic on gallery canvas is called Clarendon, and is the latest of my Fall 2018 series.

Why I love to make art canvas by hand

Spring is here!

I started rummaging through the closets and found these two pieces from early 2015.

They were made at a time when I was just starting out. Self expression on canvas (that I had made from scratch).

The primary goal was not to create art per se. The primary goal of making art was to see how many variations of colour experimentation I could do; the trick was that by making the canvas from scratch I would save oodles of cash!

“The average cost of buying canvas from retailers like Curry’s, DeSerres, or Michael’s Craft Store is anywhere from $20-$70 per canvas depending on the size. I was able to make sizes as large as 96 inches x 48 inches for less than $30.”

My attempt at imitating Monet in acrylic

Spring is on its way!

I have been back to my experimental roots, and came up with this latest work while working on wood panels. This is a 14″ x 14″ wood panel. I still use canvas, but the wood can be so much more compact and full of texture than stretched art canvas.

Working with wood has been a nice change. Right now, I am working on a very exuberant acrylic on canvas piece that incorporates bright red and yellow. It’s different, and I can’t wait to post it as soon as I feel that it is complete.

Jaune Tide: Acrylic on canvas 

Spring is nearly here: however in Southern Ontario, that does not always mean it will be warm outside or without snow.

The weather has been trite with gloomy over cast and threats of blizzards this week; so I decided to create a piece that would be an antithesis to current moods.

I call my latest piece: Jaune (yellow) Tide.

I integrated bright yellows, cerulean blues, aqua, and green hues in vibrant splashes on a gallery wrapped canvas. My favourite parts of this piece are the bright expanses of Yellow that bring warmth and happiness to the eye. The aqua is a nice offset against the blue as well.

As with many of my paintings, it can be hanged in any orientation; although it is difficult for me to decide where to sign each piece. I may adopt a symbol for signing my work in the future, so as to reduce the impact of a signature.

Red and gold in acrylic on wood

My latest work is an experimental use of gold against red on wood board. Similar to my last two posts (See below) the use of wood enables a level of texture and complexity that is not easily achieved with canvas. The size is also comparably smaller.

The orientation is more flexible, as seen above.  When viewing this piece it is really up to the observer to decide whether they prefer the gold on the bottom, top, or sides. But to be decisive, I created the piece to be hung as it looks in the first photo.

The dimensions are 14 inches x 10 inches. I finished this (and the other wood board pieces) by adding a strip of decorative trim along its edges; however, I would like to try my hand at encasing these pieces in decorative wood frames. The millwork wood that is used for this purpose is usually available at Home Depot in 8 ft lengths. The cost is usually between $5 and $15 CDN so it would be very inexpensive to make my own.

The big question for me is: can I cut the angles right to make a perfectly fitting frame?

RED: The Heart Beats

Inspiration comes in many forms; and for this piece I was inspired by love and the heart.

St Valentine’s Day was last week, and as usual we become inundated with images of cutesy cartoon hearts, and cherubs with messages telling us to show love to our friends and family by spending money.

Most of what we purchase are useless trinkets that do very little to further any true affect for our loved ones, but fills the empty space of an average cosmopolitan existence. I suppose that is a topic for another day.

My latest piece is a reflection of the heart, without the fake imagined sentiment. The heart beats. It supplies blood to organs, and for most  of us we can only pray that it does not stop beating too soon.
