Blue Ocean Acrylic on Canvas

My latest piece is ultra calm and tranquil. Continuing with the 13 x 13 inch canvas size series, I painted and poured this acrylic on canvas abstract using premium heavy duty cotton canvas stretched over thick 2×2 wood.

The title is Homonym and I feel like I can just fall into it..

The top of the piece is an abstract setting of the sun cascading over water that is becoming increasingly rough. There are wisps of grey storm clouds co-mingling with the sun- perhaps to ultimately overpower it.

There is movement in this piece, yet mysteriously a light triangle coloured object is adrift within it. I love how this one turned out!

Pink and Gold Acrylic Art

Welcome back!

Thank you for checking in to see my latest abstract acrylic artwork entitled “Ovation”. This 13 x 13 inch (33 cm x 33 cm) piece was created during a celebratory mood. I stretched premium 100% cotton canvas over thick 2 x 2 inch wood, and double primed the paint surface with gesso.

I used acrylic pouring and splattering techniques to illustrate surprise and joy. I tried a new technique by allowing base layers to dry, and adding light rose and pale pink blob-patterns that have a pearlescent glaze over top.

Gold highlights represent an excitement that contains prestige. Deep red splatter marks contrast throughout the piece signifying dramatic allure. The colours dance with each other deep into the background as this piece is examined closely, telling a story of triumph over drama.

At the crown of the golden triumph, six gold points lay atop a humble rose flourish. As a accent piece, Ovation is an attention-grabbing artistic statement.

Dark Navy Blue, Silver and Gold Metallic Abstract Acrylic on Canvas Outer Space Mood Art

My latest piece is a celestial depiction of a star collapsing into a black hole. The star is made of reams of silver and gold metallic paint. I used blending and pouring techniques to combine the dark and light areas.

The above shot was taken as the first layer of the piece dried. You can see the reflection of my light in the surface of the poured blue acrylic.

The endless abyss of blue holds a dark depth at its heart, and you can almost see the ghost-like human face that sits in the background like an echo.

Green, Blue, and Iridescent Silver Acrylic on Canvas abstract art

Recently, I completed a commissioned art work that features green, silver, and blue acrylic.

Remembering the old advice I received once: “If you want to be good at something you must always practice, practice practice!”

As a result, I have been using store bought canvas for my day to day practice. When I am ready to create a higher quality piece, I still prefer to use the canvas that I custom make. When I make my own canvas I use 100% heavy cotton canvas, I stretch it over thick 2 x inch wood, and I triple prime the canvas with gesso.

Unless an artist is paying for the highest premium canvas available, the level of quality I get from making my own canvas is unparalleled. As I have mentioned before, when an artist is unrestricted by the high costs of supplies and materials their creativity is able to reach heights that the average person can only dream of.

That being said, my latest commissioned work:

This untitled piece is 10 x 10 inches and has been painted on store bought canvas.

It is essentially a blend of colours with sharp splatters of silver. This piece is very abstract and was mainly a focus of colour composition rather than form.

It is a slight departure from my usual work, but I really enjoyed the way it developed.

Turquoise and Gold Splatter Acrylic on Canvas Calming Tropical Art

It is October and Autumn is upon us in Ontario Canada, yet my latest artwork has a warm tropical vibe.

Koral Reef 2018

It reminds me of a golden coral reef scattered across a perfect tropical sea. As with all of my art, I encourage discussion regarding what is depicted in the painting. Abstract art has the opportunity to become much more personal to the viewer/owner when there are no constrictions on the concept of what is being depicted.

The gold and iridescent turquoise in this work provides for a reflective surface, and so depending on the point of incidence (the angle at which the light hits the surface) the vibrancy of the colours can be increased or diminished.

This is a very special piece. It exhibits texture, reflective surface, and an abstract representation of shapes. With a beautiful frame, this piece would add a serene calmness to any cherished space.

Green and Blue Blended Acrylic on Sun Canvas Art

I frequently represent the sun in my art work. It adds a heavy presence and deep meaning to my art. Sometimes the subject is an abstract of an earthly landscape, and other times not. One of the things that I enjoy the most about creating art is the feedback I get from other people describing what they see. Art is truly as subjective as they say, and so I think the meaning, impression and other descriptors of a piece must change depending on who is looking. I love the sun. To me, my latest work is an island sun.

Such a beautiful combination to have blue, green and yellow splashes representing the sun.

This 13 x 13 inch acrylic on gallery canvas is called Clarendon, and is the latest of my Fall 2018 series.

Fall 2018 Acrylic Art

I am so excited to post photos of my latest work.

I have continued my emerging style of blending acrylic colours on handmade canvas. I know that mellow blues and greens are more popular with my customers, but I am often drawn toward bright orange and neon colours.

I will likely have fewer opportunities to experiment with various mediums- so my work will focus on expanding this emerging style.

Madeira and its Landmarks

PART FIVE A VISIT TO MACHICO

Machico was the original capital of the island in the early days of its settlement. It was first settled in 1491. As I understand it, Machico was only favoured until they discovered Funchal, which is about 20 minutes or 17 kilometres further West.

In the town square, you can see an old public water fountain circa 1929. The architecture shows evidence of Machico being a very old city, and much of the streets are cobble stone, and feature a rustic look.

An East facing view of the town. As you can see, there are mountains in the East and West of the town, with the beach at the southern tip.

The southern tip of Machico- the beach with imported sand. During the winter months, the locals are rarely at any beach as they describe 20 degree Celsius weather as “too cold”. Most of the people here are all tourists from colder regions. Regardless of the temperature, the view is lovely.

Madeira and its Landmarks

Part one

This December holiday, we decided to leave the country to a sunny destination. My Partner is Portuguese, so among the list of possible destinations was the beautiful island of Madeira, a territory of Portugal. Skyline: Funchal Madeira- Sao Joao Neighbourhood

While examining what specific areas and towns to visit in this exuberant country, we had considered two places: Funchal and Machico. These locations are very popular for tourists, as well as being locations where my Partner has family living. When possible, it is enjoyable to see a foreign country as the locals do. I know that this is not always possible, but it offers a nice change of pace, scenery, and general attitude toward life for Western born people.

We decided to chose our top option and stayed in Funchal, Madeira. This capital city is home to a comfortable condominium apartment in the neighbourhood of Sao Joao, which served us well as our accommodation for our trip.

Our rental car from Madeira Rentals was a sporty car equipped with GPS.

We wisely chose to spend a little extra money on a European Roaming Package for my mobile phone. It cost an extra 90$ on top of my monthly fee, but the amount of headaches that were alleviated by having access to Google Maps was well worth the cost.

My attempt at imitating Monet in acrylic

Spring is on its way!

I have been back to my experimental roots, and came up with this latest work while working on wood panels. This is a 14″ x 14″ wood panel. I still use canvas, but the wood can be so much more compact and full of texture than stretched art canvas.

Working with wood has been a nice change. Right now, I am working on a very exuberant acrylic on canvas piece that incorporates bright red and yellow. It’s different, and I can’t wait to post it as soon as I feel that it is complete.
