Gold relief painting in acrylic

My latest work is an acrylic relief painting that is heavy in texture. There is so much texture that my work is part sculpture, as the object emerges from the canvas surface.

The concept follows the theme of my last few pieces; which is to show singular symbols against a black background. As the golden image floats through the darkness, it is representative of an echo from unknown depths coming outward. I say “echo” because it is difficult to determine what becomes of a feeling or thought once it is released into the universe. Perhaps on some level (collective consciousness, spiritual, or what have you), we communicate with symbols that carry deep personal meanings.

Upon looking closer, one can detect the relief caused by the use of texture. Using my palate knife, I sculpted the division of the planet’s rings from the body of the sphere. It was also difficult to make a decision as to whether or not it was proper to paint black lines to further divide the rings from the planet.

If I could change anything about this piece, it would be the unevenness caused by the division of the planet’s ring against the sphere body of the planet. I find it distracting.

When naming this piece, I wanted to avoid the obvious choice by calling it “Saturn”. To accomplish this, I researched other planets in our solar system with rings and learned that the planet Uranus has rings! The brightest of the 13 rings of Uranus is named Epsilon, and so voila!; the name of this golden planetoid painting was chosen.

This last shot is altered; brightness levels have been reduced, while contrast has been increased. This allows the blackness of the background to really offset the gold multi faceted sphere surface and it’s rings.

Gold acrylic triangle with black

My latest 10 x 10 inch// 25 x 25 cm acrylic on canvas continues my study of singular-focused images against black negative space. This piece features a heavily textured triangle shape that is entirely golden.

Gold light

I took photos of in the light, and so the shine of the black acrylic paint allows the viewer to also see raised texture floating in the blackness. Here (below) is a shot with the brightness turned down, and the contrast brought up to maximum. The painting has a much sexier look with the adjustments- and I think I will (one day) invest in the services of a professional photographer to capture my work.

What a haunting image

The intent behind this piece was to depict the fading light of a distant dying star. The glow is homogeneous and the texture is as even as I could apply it. It reminds me of a ghostly apparition. Something emerging from the darkness that has an unknown origin.

If I could change something about this piece, it would be the lack of clean and sharp lines. I will work on honing my sculpture skills in the next piece. This style needs to be explored, and I have quite a few ideas I’m very excited to implement.

Silver, and blue acrylic abstract outer space

“Silver Tiger Nebula”

My latest acrylic on canvas is a silvery and eclectic blend of colours that reminds me of a space nebula.

Deeply layered, and complex fields exhibit depth. A black underpainting supports a thick metallic ocean of iridescent silver.

On the outer edges, blue and violet are blended; creating an intense and chaotic scene of the cosmos.

There are so many colours present that the size of this piece does not do it justice.

Finally, the stripes in the lower right quadrant remind me of of a tiger’s paw reaching out and across the nebula. As it reaches, I can only imagine the distances it will cross.

Gold and black acrylic with 24k gold leaf

My latest work is an abstract mixed media on canvas. I used 24K gold leaf in addition to gold and black acrylic to create a piece that I call: “Concerto”.

Concerto is an abstract representation of my imagination of time in the universe. Time is a fluid force that melts through its environment, seeping into small crooks and caverns. The fluidity of time is one that is difficult to contain, and is uncontrollable as a result.

The positioning of each corner where gold touches black- where time meets our reality- is temporary. In this piece, the golden field melts over-top of the black expanse in an uneven method, also signifying the non-linear nature of the measurement of time in the universe versus our perceptions.

The gold colour signifies the rarity of time to humans in our existence. Time is limited, like gold, and thus holds immense value to us. At the heart of the gold acrylic field, a spackle of 24K gold leaf represents the truth and realness that lies within the unmeasurable field of golden time.

In this way, I intend to express that the value is truly authentic, as the heart of the field is real gold and not just a representation.

Abstract Acrylic on Wood in gold, blue, and iridescent green

Latest Scratch Work: Herald Angel 2018-

This abstract 10 x 10 inch wood panel is a wild ride of eclectic technique, unusual colour, contrast, and a psychedelic trip into the imagination.

 

I named it Herald Angel because the golden field that sits in the north-west corner represents an angel’s visit. Darkness swirls below. Iridescent green floats away into the atmosphere. Its existence is alien and benevolent.

I love how the heavy iridescent green floats over the complex blue background. The swirling blue is reminiscent of an ocean from a satellite view of a planet.

Ocean Currents..Acrylic Art

Ocean Currents

One of my fixations of late, has been to capture my impressions of Earth from the viewpoint of someone looking down from space. Hours spent looking at Google Maps has helped with this (of course).

Pictured above is my latest piece: an abstract impression of islands floating in a clear and serene blue sea.

Although it is difficult to see in the photo- there is also some slight relief in this piece. You can see slightly raised lines in the shape of a circle. I enjoyed the use and mixture of colour to create this piece; however, if I could try this again, I would have started it on fresh canvas- sans relief lines.

Underwater Volcanic Pressure- Acrylic on Canvas

 

I have been working with themes lately. I find that having a theme in mind keeps a person like me much more on track. As a creative-type, my process can be wandering due to my constant desire to explore, learn, and try new things.

This is my latest work, entitled: “Underwater Volcanic Pressure”

I wanted to capture an imagined view of magma trapped between two giant tectonic plates, by blending blues greens and bright orange with yellow.

The size is a bit small at 12 x 24 inches. If I could go back, I would had made this a bit larger, as I really like the way the orange magma turned out, and I would have liked to see it spread out on a wider canvas.

Right now I am enjoying using bright orange to contrast with dark blue in my work, so I am very excited to see how this will evolve in my next few pieces.

Sun in Repose: Acrylic on Canvas

I have always been in awe of the sun. (Not unlike most other creatures on this earth of course.) One of my favourite comics features a short story about a personified celestial being (the sun) falling in love with a woman from the planet he orbited. You can read more about it here.  

I created this acrylic on canvas piece in two parts (diptych). I wanted it to be a three part (triptych), but alas, when creativity strikes you must not wait too long to capture it.

In order to have a 3rd canvas ready at the time of production I would have needed to wait another day to have the frame dry enough to stretch the canvas and prep it with gesso. I was able to spend more time blending the colours with two pieces instead of three. I used a pearlescent powder with to give a shimmering effect for the cloud area around the bright orange sun. The idea here is that the sun is peeking over a deep blue ocean to move across the sky from East to West.

Golds, Blacks, Burgundy in acrylic on canvas

The marbled effect of this 12 X 24 piece is for me: almost breath taking.

I say “almost” because I am an outspoken critic of myself, along with the fact that I am in full understanding of the fact that I am very near to achieving the style I am working toward, but have not arrived there yet.

In this piece, I gave used acrylic on canvas, with a strong emphasis on dark vs light (perhaps a thematic feature of most of my work?). Texture and relief are present.

Gold is splashed within the veins of the work, to represent redemption and I even used sparse bits of gold leaf as well.

Eye of the Hill- The dark road into the unknown alien landscape

“This road…this ever referenced road that leads to all sorts of places…”

That quote is the idea that I went for in “Eye of the Hill”. Here we have an unnatural, alien-like landscape with green hills and orange soil. In an abstract sense we could see that the sky is also green, or that the rolling hills go on forever. The observer is held to feel that they are at the foothills of an astonishing journey; one that leads to an all seeing eye.
