The marbled effect of this 12 X 24 piece is for me: almost breath taking.
I say “almost” because I am an outspoken critic of myself, along with the fact that I am in full understanding of the fact that I am very near to achieving the style I am working toward, but have not arrived there yet.
In this piece, I gave used acrylic on canvas, with a strong emphasis on dark vs light (perhaps a thematic feature of most of my work?). Texture and relief are present.
Gold is splashed within the veins of the work, to represent redemption and I even used sparse bits of gold leaf as well.
This is one of my latest pieces in acrylic on canvas. I enjoy the use of colours like blue, violet, nude/peach, greys and gold.
The execution of this piece reminds me of an airbrush technique, as we see a very slight blending of the fields into one another. The violet acts as a dark body within which I was able to play some texture and relief into.
I think that my style is evolving; an idea that is evident in this work. I am very excited to see what I come up with next, now that I have nearly completed renovations on my home office.
I wanted to feature this piece specifically because it incorporates lots of gold. I like it so much that I gave it a name;(something I have not made a habit of thus far). It is entitled “Heaven’s gate” as this was the first term that came to my mind when it was completed.
I used gold leaf, green and blue acrylic on this 12 x 6 inch canvas. The only qualm I have with this work is that it isn’t as large as it deserves to be (in my opinion). There is some limited relief and texture in this piece, and the blending is quite well executed.
I have not sold this piece yet, but even if it doesn’t sell I am happy to have it hand on my wall for as long as I am able to.
I created these as complimentary pieces using gold leaf. Each measures to be about 36 x 24 inches- quite large for acrylic on canvas. My goal was to create a glimpse into an underwater wold with dark colours blended into light yellows and gold.
I have hanged the two pieces in landscape orientation with the piece on the right above the piece on the left in my home: my hope is to create a statement wall of art that will act as a “conversation starter” in our dining area. I love interior design: especially when it is for my own home.
On the left
I like the use of violet (purple) as I rarely use this colour. It’s a colour that evokes deep emotion, and I find my eyes drawn to it when I behold this piece.
It’s very lovely.
The introduction of yellow at the top of this piece was a risk: I don’t actually love that hue of yellow as I feel that it contrasts too much with the violet colours (perhaps that is why I don’t often use violet as I find it difficult to compose colour schemes when it is involved).
On the right
I painted this piece first (before the one on the left). The colours are softer- much more somber than the hard contrast of the companion piece. There is much more gold leaf in this piece, and the dominant colours are grey and sky blue. I think this one captures the “underwater” theme more concretely.
I am looking forward to creating more pieces like this, and I think I am developing a distinct style for acrylics on canvas.
I did this piece recently as an experiment: a small 12 x 6 inch acrylic on canvas. I used the colours: red, yellow, green, and peach. Despite being abstract, it is clearly an urn of flowers.
I enjoyed the execution as it was a departure from my normal style of dark colours paired with sweeping hues of blue. It is not pop art, but would complement a traditional decorative style in any room. I sold this to an old friend who plans to hang it in her vacation home in Portugal. I hope it finds happiness there.
I painted this acrylic piece early in my career as an homage to my imagination. It began as a sketch on a piece of paper, then evolved to a drawing with thick black India Ink. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with that ink drawing once it was completed, and so, the bananas were born.
I have had a few observers of this piece comment on the fun and eye catching use of colour, as well as the fact that the bananas look very frightened by the phantom eyes that seem to be pursuing them. I really think that it is something that needs to be observed in person, as I also used a lot of relief and texture to add to the depth of the red background.
This design was so unexpected. I started off with basic experimentation with my serger (which I love, and cherish as it makes the finishing process seamless- pun intended heh heh).
I used my Janome serger to join the black lace to the bodice, as well as discovering a new approach to creating the waist ties/ belt. I was super nervous about using my Singer Iron to press the seams flat; so I tested on a scrap piece of fabric and was reassured by the fact that my concerns were correct! Too much heat on this material (which is a velvet-imitation poly and cotton blend) causes slight melting and the ever dreaded iron stain from melty fabric.
The red frills really add a pop of colour for the eyes to go to-(red accents are something I am intrigued by this month for whatever reason. Perhaps a nod to February being the month of love?)
